El grupo Ecología se creó en el año 1995 y representa actualmente un amplio equipo de trabajo. Desde sus inicios, la investigación ha estado dirigida a aspectos relacionados a la estructura y funcionamiento de los ecosistemas estuariales del Atlántico Sud-Occidental, con un marcado abordaje experimental. Se comenzó con estudios a pequeña escala que incluían principalmente procesos de predación, competencia, ingeniería de ecosistemas, herbivoría y efectos sobre la dinámica del sedimento. En los últimos años los proyectos de investigación han sido más integrales incorporando, por ejemplo, procesos que regulan las tramas tróficas y la dinámica de nutrientes en sistemas de interfaz (e.g. interfaces tierra-agua, o entre masas de agua de diferentes características), con escalas espaciales y temporales variables. Este grupo cuenta con una amplia trayectoria en la formación de recursos humanos. Se han realizado más de 30 tesis de licenciatura, 27 tesis de doctorado y se han dirigido más de 24 becarios postdoctorales. En la actualidad el grupo se conforma de 13 investigadores y 5 becarios. Desde sus inicios los proyectos han estado financiados por los principales organismos científicos nacionales (CONICET, ANPCYT, UNMdP), así también como por organismos privados (Fundación Antorchas) e internacionales (IAI, International Foundation for Science, National Geographic Society, PNUD/GEF/Patagonia, Comisión Europea).
Todos los proyectos están diseñados y ejecutados para obtener resultados publicables en revistas científicas de alto impacto.
Dentro de la UNMdP el grupo se encuentra fuertemente vinculado a la asignatura Ecología General de la carrera de Licenciatura en Ciencias Biológicas. En dicho espacio, los integrantes del grupo realizan tareas docentes transmitiendo el conocimiento y la experiencia a los alumnos.

Factores que regulan la acumulación y reciclado del carbono y nitrógeno en marismas del Atlántico Sudoccidental

Relación entre los gradientes físicos y ambientales con la α y β-diversidad de artrópodos y pequeños mamíferos de marismas, así como con sus roles ecosistémicos.

Análisis de diferencias en los parámetros de historias de vida de bivalvos frente a variaciones y/o cambio climático (ENSO, acidificación, desoxigenación, aumento temperatura); su respuesta frente a diferentes interacciones tróficas (parasitismo, depredación) y su esclerocronología como herramienta para la identificación de variaciones climáticas a macroescala.

Variabilidad espacial y diferentes factores que afectan las tramas tróficas marinas: efectos del aporte de detritos en ambientes estuariales, efectos asociados a la presencia de frentes marinos y efectos relacionados con las pesquerías.
Comportamiento de organismos intermareales y su papel en los procesos ecológicos

Factores que regulan los ensambles de especies en sistemas costeros y funciones ecosistémicas asociadas. Influencia relativa de procesos estocásticos y determinísticos.

Factores que afectan y regulan los ciclos biogeoquímicos que ocurren en intermareales de fondos blandos.
