A partir de 1979, se inician estudios en acuario sobre nutrición y acción de distintas variables ambientales en el camarón Artemesia longinaris. En 1983 ante requerimientos de la industria, se inician los primeros trabajos de engorde de camarón y langostino con resultados promisorios. Es así que varias empresas se interesan en la realización de pruebas de engorde en estanques externos. En la actualidad se trabaja en la Estación Nágera, dependiente de la UNMDP y ubicada en Playas de Chapadmalal, Partido de Gral. Pueyrredón, y en los laboratorios del complejo universitario Manuel Belgrano de la UNMDP.
1. Se ha obtenido la cría masiva de postlarvas de diversas especies de peneidos, poniendo a punto el sistema. En un lapso inferior a los 20 días se pueden obtener postlarvas de 1 día con supervivencias superiores al 50% (por lo general entre 60 y 80%), que a nivel internacional se considera aceptable.
2. Se han obtenido en forma masiva postlarvas de 20 días de edad, estadio en el que son enviadas a estanques externos para su engorde
3. Se ha obtenido la maduración, cópula y desove en cautiverio del langostino argentino, con un 20% de hembras que desovan entre 80.000 y 368.750 huevos por puesta.
4. Se ha estudiado la calidad reproductora de los machos de langostino y hasta el momento se ha evaluado la calidad y cantidad de espermatozoides por espermatóforo compuesto.
5. Se ha trabajado en estudios de nutrición tanto de camarón (Artemesia longinaris) como de langostino (Pleoticus muelleri). Se determinaron los requerimientos de ácidos grasos de ambas especies, se estudió la acción del colesterol sobre el crecimiento y la supervivencia de Pleoticus muelleri, observándose mejor crecimiento con dietas que contenían 1,5% o más de colesterol.
6. Se estudió el requerimiento de las vitaminas A. E, D Y K en Artemesia longinaris y Pleoticus muelleri..
7. Con respecto a los requerimientos de aminoácidos en las dietas se determinó la composición porcentual de aminoácidos en músculo y hepatopáncreas de juveniles del camarón Artemesia longinaris. Se trabajo también con relación a la acción de estos aminoácidos en las dietas observándose que no existen diferencias en el crecimiento y supervivencia con algunas de las relaciones de arginina:lisina probadas en distintas dietas. En cuanto al aminoácido metionina, el estudio histológico del hepatopáncreas demostró que los animales alimentados con dietas semipurificadas suplementadas con 0-20% de metionina no presentan diferencias en las características morfológico funcionales del órgano.
8. Se han efectuado diversas entregas de postlarvas a la industria y organismos oficiales (2500000):
El objetivo general del grupo es el desarrollo de tecnologías para el cultivo de crustáceos, con énfasis en el camarón y el langostino argentinos.
Las líneas de investigación del grupo son:
a) Larvicultura masiva,
b) Engorde de juveniles en estanques externos hasta talla comercial,
c) Estudios de nutrición en distintos estadios del ciclo de vida,
d) Maduración en cautiverio,
e) Repuestas de estos organismos a stress.
