La creación del Grupo de Investigación Biotaxonomía Morfológica y Molecular de Peces se fundamenta en la necesidad de actualizar y mejorar el conocimiento sobre la taxonomía y sistemática de los peces de Argentina, sobre la base de estudios de sistemática tradicional, morfometría geométrica y de taxonomía molecular analizando sus características biológicas, las relaciones entre especies y con el medio que habitan y la implicancia que estos estudios conllevan en un enfoque sistemático- filogenético. El grupo de investigación tiene como finalidad estudiar peces que por sus características biológicas y relaciones con el ambiente en el cual habitan se distribuyen en una amplia región de variada estructura hidrográfica, desde el ambiente marino hacia regiones estuariales, y ambientes dulceacuícolas, incluyendo las regiones antárticas.

Los objetivos de este grupo son:
Actualizar y mejorar el conocimiento de la taxonomía y sistemática de los peces de Argentina.
Vincular los grupos taxonómicos con el medio en el que habitan, relacionando sus características biológicas con los cambios en los parámetros ambientales.
Aplicar estudios morfológicos, morfométricos geométricos, junto con herramientas moleculares para la identificación precisa de los peces.
Contribuir a la conservación y manejo de los recursos ícticos como unidades sustentables de biodiversidad.
Aportar información para la discusión de relaciones filogenéticas e historias de vida de los peces proveyendo información valiosa para estudios de biodiversidad.

El Grupo de Investigación Biotaxonomía Morfológica y Molecular de Peces (BIMOPE) desarrolla una línea de investigación orientada principalmente hacia la taxonomía, sistemática, biología y relaciones de los peces con el medio ambiente.
Las investigaciones desarrolladas por el Grupo de Investigación están orientadas a cubrir dos aspectos fundamentales: científico y tecnológico.
En el aspecto científico los resultados permitirán tener un conocimiento integrado de la Diversidad de Peces de Argentina, no solamente desde el aspecto taxonómico nomenclatorial, sino desde el punto de vista sistemático, incorporando características de historia de vida, filogenéticas, ecológicas, morfométricas y moleculares. La información adquirida permite, además, elaborar una base datos electrónica que incluye, un código de barras genético específico, basado en la secuenciación génica del cox I (DNA Barcoding), imágenes digitalizadas de especímenes de referencia, y coordenadas geográficas de los ejemplares colectados. La base de datos, a su vez, relaciona información sobre especímenes de referencia, aspectos nomenclatoriales y rangos de distribución provista por taxónomos expertos, historias de vida y referencias bibliográficas de cada especie. Esta información contribuirá de manera complementaria el actual estado del conocimiento de la fauna íctica argentina.
Desde el punto de vista tecnológico, el Grupo BIMOPE tiene a su cargo uno de los cinco laboratorios iBOL de referencia (Lab. iBOL Mar del Plata) recientemente construido y que permitirá aplicar conocimientos taxonómicos para identificar ejemplares biológicos y serán de aplicación inmediata en el campo de la biología pesquera y la Administración de la Diversidad Biológica, ya que los resultados obtenidos darán información sobre aspectos de biodiversidad y recursos y productos obtenidos de la pesca, industrializados o no. Por otro lado, el Código de Barras de ADN está generando una biblioteca de referencia global de secuencias, de acceso libre y gratuito. De este modo, hay una estrecha vinculación con la trazabilidad y certificación de especies y productos.
