Los organismos y los ecosistemas están cambiando en respuesta al calentamiento, la acidificación y la desoxigenación de los océanos producido por las emisiones de CO2 acumuladas determinando un escenario de cambio climático (CC). La dificultad en distinguir entre las señales proveniente de la variabilidad climática natural (por ejemplo Oscilaciones del Sur de El Niño: ENSO, Corriente circumpolar Antártica: CCA, etc.), de aquellas provenientes de los impactos antropogénicos, hace que la interpretación de estos cambios sea un objetivo difícil de alcanzar. A pesar que los océanos moderan el cambio climático antropogénico, este tiene grandes impactos en su física y química, con importantes consecuencias para los ecosistemas y los servicios ecosistémicos (esto es seguridad alimentaria y los medios de vida de millones de personas), sobre todo en sistemas costeros donde los recursos pesqueros y la actividad recreativa son de vital importancia para los desarrollos económicos locales y regionales. Por otro lado hay un aumento de evidencias que sugiere que las interacciones con otros factores ambientales, tales como el grado de irradiación, la disponibilidad de nutrientes, ubicación geográfica, y la composición de especies en la comunidad modulan fuertemente los efectos biológicos del calentamiento, acidificación e hipoxia de los océanos. Así mismo, las pesquerías consideradas como otro impacto humano directo sobre los ecosistemas, puede reducir la capacidad de adaptación de las especies marinas y ecosistemas a los impactos relacionados con el CO2, ya que la pesca puede producir pérdida de hábitat, contaminación, disturbios, introducción de especies, reducción de la diversidad de especies, simplificación de la red trófica alimentaria y por lo tanto aumento de la sensibilidad de los ecosistemas al cambio climático.
A partir de los resultados del trabajo conjunto de este grupo, los encargados de la formulación de políticas y los administradores de recursos dispondrán de información en la que basar las decisiones que afecten a las políticas de protección ambiental, utilización de recursos y desarrollo sostenible. Los principales beneficiarios serán las comunidades costeras que dependen en gran medida de los recursos oceánicos, la comunidad científica y el público en general, que se preocupan por las condiciones de la acidificación de los océanos y otros estresores relacionados al CC y sus consecuencias para los recursos marinos. El proyecto ayudará a identificar e implementar vías de adaptación y mitigación diseñadas para mejorar la capacidad de adaptación de las comunidades costeras bajo un escenario de cambio climático, en este sentido se propone trabajar en forma interdisciplinaria con científicos naturales y sociales, y también profesionales y responsables políticos a fin de fundamentar la adopción de decisiones con base científica.
Dentro de la propuesta de trabajo se estará contribuyendo con aporte de información para abordar la Agenda 2030 sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible aprobada por la ONU en el 2015, a partir de la definición de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), particularmente el ODS 14.3 en el que se pide «reducir al mínimo y abordar los efectos de la acidificación de los océanos, incluso mediante una mayor cooperación científica a todos los niveles». El establecimiento de la Agenda 2030 y la posterior firma del Acuerdo de París, como un acuerdo dentro de la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático que establece medidas para la reducción de las emisiones de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI) a través de la mitigación, adaptación y resiliencia de los ecosistemas a efectos del Calentamiento Global, han impulsado a los Estados a tomar acciones definidas y concretas respecto al Cambio Climático Global y la acidificación del océano en particular. El acuerdo tiene como objetivo «reforzar la respuesta mundial a la amenaza del cambio climático, en el contexto del desarrollo sostenible y de los esfuerzos por erradicar la pobreza». En este sentido estamos trabajando con organizaciones mundiales a fin de realizar buenas prácticas en la formulación y desarrollo de los indicadores para el ODS 14.
