El grupo de investigación Zooología-Invertebrados fue creado en 1991 en el Departamento de Biología de la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (Universidad de Mar del Plata) por el Dr. Eduardo Spivak, quien lo dirigió hasta su jubilación en el año 2019, con el objetivo de estudiar la historia natural (sensu Bartholomew, 1984) de crustáceos y poliquetos de agua salobres. En una primera etapa el objetivo fue la caracterización de la estructura poblacional de varias especies de cangrejos y camarones que habitan la laguna Mar Chiquita (Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina), como Cyrtograpsus angulatus, Neohelice (=Chasmagnathus) granulata, Uca uruguayensis y Palaemonetes argentinus, y del poliqueto constructor de arrecifes Ficopomatus enigmaticus. En una segunda etapa, el esfuerzo se dirigió al estudio de la biología reproductiva y larval de las dos primeras especies, estableciendo la existencia de una estrategia de exportación de larvas desde el estuario hacia el mar y estimando la fecundidad e inversión reproductiva. Sobre la base de los conocimientos adquiridos se estudió luego, experimentalmente, el efecto de las bajas salinidades y la temperatura sobre embriones, larvas y juveniles de N. granulata, C. angulatus y P. argentinus y los patrones y procesos asociados con el reclutamiento y la supervivencia de los primeros estadios juveniles de los cangrejos. Posteriormente, se agregaron otras especies de crustáceos, como el cangrejo de las rocas Danielethus (Platyxanthus) crenulatus, el cangrejo del barro Panopeus meridionalis, el cangrejo arveja Calyptraeotheres garthi, el camarón alfeido autóctono Betaeus lilianae, el camarón invasor Palaemon macrodactylus, el tanaidáceo intermareal Tanais dulongii y varias especies de anfípodos autóctonos e invasores. De esta forma, se ampliaron las temáticas abordadas y se estudiaron el comportamiento reproductivo y de cuidado maternal, los sistemas de apareamiento, el crecimiento y la muda, el desarrollo ovárico, la osmoregulación de embriones y larvas, la ecofisiología, comportamiento de la alimentación y traslación, y se desarrolló un proyecto interdisciplinario sobre las relaciones entre la depredación sobre cangrejos por aves y su neurobiología. Además, se describió la morfología larval de varias especies de cangrejos. Muchos de estos estudios se llevaron a cabo dentro del marco de las diferencias latitudinales detectadas en rasgos de historia de vida y las relaciones entre conectividad, migración larval, diferenciación genética de poblaciones y biogeografía, e incluyeron muestreos y experimentos en Bahía Blanca (Provincia Buenos Aires), San Antonio Oeste (Provincia Río Negro) y el Golfo San José (Provincia Chubut), además de Mar Chiquita. Actualmente se desarrollan también estudios sobre el efecto de estresores como la acidificación oceánica, la iluminación artificial y el sonido sobre distintos aspectos de la historia de vida y ecología de crustáceos, el comportamiento y la personalidad de especies invasoras, los mecanismos ecofisológicos de tolerancia a la salinidad de camarones palemónidos de distintos ambientes y los efectos comportamentales y morfológicos de las señales de alarma y depredación durante la etapa embrionaria en el mismo grupo de crustáceos. Los resultados obtenidos fueron publicados en más de 150 artículos en revistas especializadas internacionales indexadas, y capítulos de libros. Durante el período 1991-2021 se finalizaron más de 20 tesis de licenciatura y 12 doctorales, y se establecieron convenios de cooperación internacional con Alemania, España y Francia.
