Las actividades del hombre han ocasionado en varias partes del planeta una significativa degradación y pérdida del hábitat, perjudicando el funcionamiento del ecosistema y reduciendo el valor de los servicios ecosistémicos. En este sentido, ambientes como el pastizal templado de Argentina y los ambientes costeros y oceánicos del norte de Patagonia son áreas de la región que han sufrido un importante impacto. A pesar del marcado avance en el conocimiento de aspectos básicos de la ecología de vertebrados en la región pampeana y su costa marina, sigue siendo evidente la necesidad de seguir investigando en esa línea y convirtiendo la información generada en herramientas de conservación y manejo. Considerando la intensidad y magnitud de desarrollo urbano sobre los ecosistemas, se plantea la necesidad de analizar las respuestas desde una perspectiva regional. El Grupo Vertebrados ha direccionado el resultado de sus investigaciones a organismos gubernamentales encargados de elaborar e implementar planes de conservación y tomar decisiones referidas al manejo de recursos naturales. El presente proyecto tiene por objetivos: (1) estudiar la estructura y funcionamiento de poblaciones y ensambles de Vertebrados en ambientes naturales y con diferente grado de impacto humano, (2) analizar características biológicas y ecológicas en especies con particular interés, y (3) proveer de información crítica a organismos de ejecución y tomadores de decisión para promover el desarrollo y mejoramiento de planes de manejo y conservación en el área de estudio.

Dentro del proyecto Ecología y Conservación de Vertebrados se desarrollan las siguientes líneas de investigación:

(1) Ecología y conservación de aves marinas (responsable Dr. Marco Favero)
Nuestro interés radica en el estudio de diferentes aspectos de la biología, ecología (espacial, trófica, comportamental y poblacional) de especies de aves marinas y costeras con diferente estado de conservación. Buscamos abordar las problemáticas que enfrentan las aves marinas en relación al efecto de la variabilidad ambiental y actividades antrópicas a través de un proceso inclusivo que contemple la academia, organismos de gobierno y ONGs para la generación de conocimientos y desarrollo de regulaciones e implementación de las mismas. Actualmente el grupo se encuentra trabajando sobre las siguientes temáticas: 1) evaluación del efecto de la variabilidad ambiental (productividad, frentes, cambio climático) y las actividades antrópicas (pesquerías comerciales, turismo) sobre la ecología del movimiento, poblacional y trófica de especies marinas pelágicas y costeras; 2) Análisis de la respuesta comportamental de las aves en función del contexto social, la heterogeneidad ambiental y las actividades antrópicas; 3) Identificación de áreas prioritarias para la conservación de aves marinas y 4) generación de información de base para el mejoramiento del estado de conservación de especies marinas.

(2) Ecología y conservación de aves de pastizal (responsable Dr. Juan Pablo Isacch)
Evaluamos la respuesta ecológica de las aves que habitan ambientes costeros (marismas, pastizales, agroecosistemas, dunas) frente a diferentes conductores de cambio ambiental, mediante el análisis a diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales (actual y evolutiva). A escala ecológica intentamos evaluar: la respuesta comportamental de las aves durante el período reproductivo a la intensificación de la actividad agrícola y urbanización; el efecto de la actividad agrícola y la urbanización sobre la composición y uso de hábitat de especies de aves que habitan ambientes costeros; evaluar el rol de la fragmentación de los ambientes naturales y del uso de de la tierra en la matriz de paisaje sobre los ensambles y sobre poblaciones particulares de aves de pastizal. A escala evolutiva intentamos examinar patrones de diferenciación genética y fenotípica entre poblaciones sometidas a diferentes regímenes de disturbio.

(3) Ecología y conservación de aves rapaces (responsable Lic. María Susana Bó)
Estudio de los parámetros y el comportamiento reproductivo de las diferentes especies de rapaces Falconiformes y Estrigiformes, en ambientes naturales y modificados, evaluándose el efecto de la modificación del ambiente sobre dichas características. También se analizan los espectros tróficos de las especies de rapaces y se determinan las interrelaciones tróficas entre los integrantes del ensamble. Por otro lado, se analiza la función del comportamiento en la respuesta ante los cambios del ambiente. En particular se evalúa la manera en la cual características comportamentales y cognitivas, como la respuesta ante estímulos novedosos, aprendizaje y memoria, determinan la flexibilidad comportamental de los individuos y por lo tanto la capacidad de sobrevivir a nuevos entornos.

(4) Herpetología (responsable Dra. Laura Vega)
Analizamos los patrones espaciales sobre la distribución, estructura genética y persistencia poblacional de lagartijas arenícolas del género Liolaemus en las dunas costeras bonaerenses. Se estudia el efecto de la composición y configuración del paisaje sobre la distribución actual, la conectividad y la viabilidad de las poblaciones naturales en especies de reptiles, utilizando como herramientas el modelado ecológico, los Sistemas de Información Geográfica y marcadores moleculares. Al mismo tiempo evaluamos el rendimiento fisiológico-funcional y los atributos de historia de vida de diferentes poblaciones de lagartijas del clado L. wiegmannii a lo largo de su rango latitudinal de distribución, identificando el efecto de factores ambientales e intrínsecos de los individuos y sus implicancias en un marco ecológico-evolutivo. Comparamos parámetros poblacionales y ecofisiológicos de estas poblaciones entre ambientes naturales de pastizal y pastizales modificados con forestación exótica.

(5) Especies vegetales invasoras (responsable Dra. Viviana Comparatore)
Manejo de un área de reserva y control de especies vegetales invasoras. Planificar, diseñar y generar pautas de manejo para un área de reserva de la naturaleza de acceso público en el sistema serrano de Tandilia oriental (Reserva Natural Paititi, Partido de Gral. Pueyrredón, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina). Relevamiento florístico en relación a la geomorfología, que junto al relevamiento faunístico se utilizará para zonificar la reserva y asignarle diferentes usos a estas zonas como por ejemplo conservación, investigación, recreación, educación. Establecer criterios de prioridad en cuanto a la necesidad de intervenir sobre áreas con diferente nivel de vulnerabilidad en relación a especies endémicas, amenazadas o invasoras. Evaluar el efecto de la combinación de métodos físicos y químicos en el control de la invasión de la acacia negra (Acacia melanoxylon) en las sierras de la Reserva y evaluar el impacto de estos tratamientos sobre las comunidades vegetales. Iniciar el funcionamiento de un centro de interpretación en la Reserva.
